HOLLAND TWP. — A 55-year-old Zeeland man suffered serious injuries when impaled by the handlebars of his bicycle Monday night.

John Dryer was riding his bicycle across a parking lot near the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and 112th Avenue in Holland Township shortly before 9 p.m. when his tire hit a groove in the pavement. This caused the handlebars to turn and throw him from the bike.

The handlebars impaled Dryer near his groin, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Passersby, including an off-duty Holland police officer, applied pressure to the wound, preventing further injury, police said.

Dryer was transported to Holland Hospital and then transferred to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was in serious condition at the time.
