One dead in semi rollover on I-96 near Fruitport

Update: Name released in fatal semi crash

The name of the driver in an early-morning traffic crash on I-96 in Fruitport Township has been released. Aaron Mather, 50, a Fruitport-area resident, has been identified as the driver of the tractor-trailer that crashed at approximately 1:20 a.m. on eastbound I-96 near the 4-mile marker. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled.

FRUITPORT TWP. — A semi-truck driver is believed to be the victim of a deadly crash in Muskegon County.

It happened just before 1:25 a.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of I-96 near mile marker 3. That's just east of Sternberg Road in Fruitport Township.

The call came in as a semi rolled over in the median with one victim unconscious and not breathing. Investigators confirmed that one person had died.

As of 5:45 a.m., Fruitport Township police reported one westbound lane was still closed to traffic while crews worked to remove the semi from the scene.

The highway opened later in the morning.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash.
