A 62-year-old Spring Lake man suffered a possible medical problem before sideswiping a Grand Haven business late Wednesday morning.

The man’s name was not released.

The pickup truck crashed into the side of VanPelt Industries, 720 Taylor Ave., at about 11:46 a.m.

The man was traveling north on Kooiman Street when his pickup truck left the road and hit the building, said Sgt. Josh Tomes of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

The impact tore off a tire and put a hole in the building wall.

Tomes said that paramedics from North Ottawa Community Hospital arrived on the scene first and had to smash the vehicle’s window to get the door open.

The man was still suffering from the medical condition when the ambulance left the scene.

Tomes said there were no other obvious injuries to the man, and the airbags in his vehicle did not deploy. His truck did not go into the building.

Business owners Kevin and Holly Bacon said they were sitting at their desks when they heard the crash.

“I saw the truck come up on the grass,” Holly said. “I wondered what he was doing and then he hit the building.”

Kevin said his back was to the window, but he heard his wife yelling and then heard the crash. They ran outside to help.

“We could see inside the truck that he was obviously having a medical problem,” Kevin said. “We couldn’t get to him because the truck was locked.”
