Joe Correia and his 11-year-old grandson escaped the house shortly before 6 p.m. Dec. 31 when the house began to feel warm and then started filling with smoke, according to Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Brian Sipe.
The chief said he would be meeting with insurance company investigators to determine the cause and origin of the fire. He noted that the home was a total loss.
Neighbors said they intend to rally and help Correia, whom they describe as “a very nice man” who took good care of his grandson.
Correia said he plans to stay with a daughter who lives in the area.
No other information was available on his status, or the status of the fire investigation.
