Firefighters were called to 15170 Hickory St. at about 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they saw flames coming from the back of the home.
Family members had been working on the gutters in the back of the home about an hour prior to the fire, Spring Lake Deputy Fire Chief John Stalzer said. It appears that is the area where the fire started, but it was not clear Thursday night what caused the fire, he added.
The homeowners used a garden hose and extinguisher to attempt putting out the fire.
Firefighters had to work for about 40 minutes to put out the blaze. They had to cut holes in the roof to ventilate the smoke.
Damage was mainly to the home’s back exterior and an interior back wall, Stalzer said.
Hickory Street between North Fruitport Road and 148th Avenue was closed to traffic while firefighters worked to contain the fire.
The fire remains under investigation.
