FERRYSBURG — Monday morning’s rush-hour traffic was slowed when an older SUV caught on fire on northbound U.S. 31 between Ridge Street and VanWagoner Road.

Ferrysburg firefighters responded to the scene at about 6:50 a.m.

A Muskegon man was returning home after taking his wife to work in Grand Haven when he noticed other vehicles slowing around him, said Ferrysburg Fire Chief Mike Olthof. The man pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and saw smoke coming out of his 1995 Chevrolet Suburban.

Firefighters arrived and found the Suburban’s engine compartment in flames, Olthof said.

Northbound U.S. 31 traffic was allowed through the area to one lane. The scene was cleared in about an hour.
