Spring Lake Township is continuing its fire hydrant replacement program with a project along West Spring Lake Road.

“We are in the third year of a 10-year replacement program where we hope to replace 100 hydrants,” Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said. “This year, Northern Pipeline has replaced seven hydrants. We have three more to go this spring.”

The township has nearly 800 hydrants in its system.

“The individual fire hydrants that are being replaced are a much older style of hydrant that are now out of date,” Gallagher said.

The antiquity means it's more difficult and expensive to locate parts and repair the hydrants.

When every minute matters in combating a fire, it's also smart to have every hydrant be consistent “so when the fire department pulls up to them they know what they're dealing with,” Gallagher said.
