Lakers star Nick Krueger held the lead most of Day 1, after birdieing two of his first three holes. However, the Grand Valley State signee, who started his day on the par-3 seventh hole, ran into trouble near the middle of his round.
Krueger bogeyed the par-4 18th to drop back to 1 under; he then made triple-bogey on the par-4 first, and then a bogey on the par-5 second hole to fall back to 3 over. Krueger was able to par his last four holes to shoot an opening-round 3-over 75.
As a team, Spring Lake ended Round 1 in seventh place. Freshman Evan McDermott fired a 9-over 81, Jack Ogden shot a 10-over 82 and Evan Schock shot a 16-over 88.
DeWitt’s Charlie DeLong and Forest Hills Eastern’s Brad Smithson lead the tournament after shooting matching 1-under 71s. Smithson, a Michigan State University signee, had a hole-in-one on the seventh hole.
Forest Hills Northern leads as a team after shooting an impressive 296 in Round 1. Spring Lake shot a 326.
Spring Lake, and Krueger, has some work to do Saturday if they are to earn All-State honors.
