POLKTON TWP. — Police have released the identity of the man killed in a fiery crash on I-96 last week.

Andrew “Drew” Passinault, 22, of Grand Rapids was the driver of a 2001 Ford Explorer that went off the interstate’s westbound lanes in Polkton Township shortly after 8 a.m. Oct. 19. The SUV struck a tree and burst into flames.

Passinault was the only person in the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not revealed pending a review of dental records.

The incident occurred near 88th Avenue, about halfway between Coopersville and Nunica.

Witnesses said the SUV was being driven erratically and at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

Immediately after the crash, the witnesses tried to help the SUV driver, but were pushed back because of the flames.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
