GRAND HAVEN TWP. — A Grand Rapids-area man riding a motorized scooter on Robbins Road was hit by a car shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Police said James Wolffis, 40, was taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital by ambulance after the crash near Mitchell Street in Grand Haven Township. He was alert and conscious when he was put on a stretcher, and police on the scene indicated that the Wyoming man suffered minor injuries.

Wolffis was listed in stable condition at NOCH on Monday evening, said Sgt. Cal Keuning of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Garrod Malley said he and Wolffis had been working on the moped before Wolffis took it for a test drive.

Wolffis was traveling east on Robbins Road when a car behind him attempted to pass at the same time Wolffis began a left turn onto a private driveway. That’s when the car hit the scooter from behind.

Keuning said the driver of the car, 34-year-old Angela Haynes of Allendale, was not injured.

Wolffis was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Keuning said.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by Grand Haven Township firefighters and NOCH paramedics. The incident remains under investigation, Keuning said.
