PARK TWP. — A 23-year-old Holland man died Sunday afternoon after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Tunnel Park on Holland’s north side.

An ambulance transported Nathan Jon Marcus to Holland Hospital following the incident. He died later at the hospital, said Sgt. Cal Keuning of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews responded to the park shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday when a witness reported a man facedown in the water about 150 yards offshore.

An Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol deputy responded by boat and found Marcus facedown in the water and wearing a life jacket.

A deputy entered the water, turned the man over and then swam him to shore where other emergency crews were waiting.

Keuning said a preliminary investigation revealed that Marcus was driving a personal watercraft south on Lake Michigan toward the Holland pier heads. A witness said the man leaned over and fell off the machine and into the water.

Crews responding to the scene included the Park Township and Holland fire departments, and American Medical Response ambulance.

The incident remains under investigation, Keuning said.
