Grand Haven police searching for missing boy, 11

UPDATE: Derek was found at about 5:15 p.m. walking near Russ’ Restaurant on Beacon Boulevard in Grand Haven. Police caught up with him on Park Street just west of Beacon Boulevard after the youth walked there along the railroad tracks.

Tribune reporter Becky Vargo was the first to spot Derek. She immediately called 911 and police arrived within minutes. He was then taken back to school to be reunited with his mother.

Grand Haven police and Grand Haven Area Public Schools personnel are searching the city’s south side for a missing 11-year-old boy.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety said Derek Edward Poort walked away from White Pines Intermediate School late Thursday afternoon. He was last observed in a field near Barbara Court at 3:22 p.m. and possibly walking in a southeasterly direction.

Derek is described as black, approximately 5 feet tall, and has short black hair (longer on top). He is wearing a blue T-shirt with the words "Pizza....Yes Please!" on it, and blue jeans.

He lives off Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township.

Special situation: Derek is cognitively impaired.
