HOLLAND — An 18-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Holland on Monday night.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the Holland Department of Public Safety was called to the area of 16th Street and U.S. 31 to investigate a crash. Upon arrival, police determined that a vehicle traveling south on the highway hit the woman, who was westbound on 16th Street on a bicycle.

According to witnesses, the 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck had a green light when the crash took place.

Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene, but the woman died as a result of the “significant injuries sustained in the crash,” according to a press release from Holland police Capt. Rick Walters.

The dead woman has been identified as Yen Ngo. She was visiting the Holland area from Rock Island, Illinois.

Joshua Powers, a 21-year-old Holland-area resident, was driving the pickup truck. He did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by police and further information will be released as it becomes available.

Ngo was a freshman at Augustana College in Illinois, and is originally from Hanoi, Vietnam. She was visiting a friend in Michigan during her winter break.

The university held a reflection ceremony for Ngo on Tuesday.

“The Augustana community is mourning the loss of a student who was killed last night in an accident while visiting a friend in Michigan,” the university Tweeted. “At this sad time, we are reminded that our greatest gifts are the lives of our loved ones.”

The Michigan Department of Transportation said the U.S. 31/16th Street intersection was closed during the crash investigation, and reopened at 11:10 p.m.
