ALLENDALE TWP. — Two children were injured when their father’s car slid on icy roads through a stop sign at an Allendale-area intersection late Sunday afternoon.

An ambulance transported Emeleigh Lewis, 8, and Savannah Lewis, 3, to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids following the 5:57 p.m. crash, according to Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

The children were properly secured in booster and child seats at the time of the crash, Wildfong said. The girls suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Their father, 39-year-old James Lewis of Allendale, was driving west on Pierce Street and was attempting to stop for a stop sign at 52nd Avenue, Wildfong said. The vehicle slid into the intersection and was struck by a northbound car driven by Nolan Pelkey, 21, of Grand Haven.

James Lewis and Pelkey were not injured. A front-seat passenger in the Lewis car, Julie Lewis, 37, also was not injured.

Responding to the scene with Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies were Grand Valley State University police, Allendale Township firefighters and Life Ambulance.
