A Fruitport man was in serious condition after he being struck by a car Saturday night on Apple Drive in Crockery Township.

Police said Foster Champagne, 48, was transported to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon following the 9:53 p.m. crash.

Witnesses said Champagne was walking across Apple Drive at 144th Avenue, when he stopped in the middle of the road and yelled back at the house he had just left, said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. Champagne was standing in the eastbound lane when he was struck by a Chrysler mini-van.

The driver of the eastbound van, Samuel France, 18, of Spring Lake, told police he did not see the man until he hit him, Wildfong said. France was not injured.

Champagne was wearing dark clothing and crossing the road in an unlit area, Wildfong said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Crockery and Spring Lake Township firefighters assisted at the scene, which was on the boarder between the two townships.
