Spring training set for community emergency response team

WEST OLIVE — An eight-week basic training course will begin April 11 for residents interested in becoming part of Ottawa County’s Community Emergency Response Team.

The class is free and registration is on a first-come basis. There are limited spots available, and the deadline for registration is April 6.

Sessions takes place on Wednesdays, from 6-9 p.m., at the county’s Fillmore Street Complex, 12220 Fillmore St., West Olive. 

Units include: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, CERT organization, disaster psychology, terrorism, and CERT and disaster simulation.

Participants are not required to become part of CERT; however, information will be available to learn more about how to apply to become part of the team.

CERT is part of the Citizen Corps programs under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. CERT teams in Ottawa County are organized through the Ottawa County Emergency Management Office.
