CROCKERY TWP. — A Fruitport man was injured late Thursday afternoon when his pickup truck ran off 144th Avenue in Crockery Township and smashed into a large tree, police said.

Roger Leech, 63, was southbound on 144th when he drove his 2014 Ford F150 off the east side of the road, where the truck struck the tree.

“It is believed that Roger may have had a medical issue prior to the crash, causing him to run off the road,” said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Police were dispatched to the crash at 5:50 p.m. The initial reports were that one person was pinned in a smashed truck, and the truck was on fire. However, Leech was not pinned in and was able to get out of the truck on his own, Wildfong said. Also, the truck was not on fire.

Leech was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was taken to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where he was listed in stable condition with minor injuries, Wildfong said.
