Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officer Eric Berends was honored Monday night for an employment milestone with the city.

Berends was recognized for two decades of service to the community.

Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke presented Berends with a certificate and commemorative jacket to celebrate his 20 years of city employment. Hawke noted that Berends has played a big role in working in the area schools and with young adults during his career.

“He’s been our D.A.R.E. officer and our T.E.A.M. officer, and he also has been dedicated to Kids Hope mentoring, and mentored a young man in the elementary school for several years,” Hawke said. “He has a big heart for kids, which he’s always put to work through his job.”
