OLIVE TWP. — A Zeeland man was in critical condition after his motorcycle struck the cab of a semi-truck late Tuesday morning.

Christopher Pearl was driving a 2017 Suzuki GSX1300 motorcycle north on 96th Avenue, north of Polk Street in Olive Township, at 11:35 a.m., said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. The motorcyclist started passing the semi-truck at about the same time the 2015 Freightliner slowed and started to turn left into Tyson Foods, Austin said.

The motorcycle struck the driver’s side door of the semi-truck.

Pearl was airlifted in critical condition to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Austin said.

The driver of the semi — 45-year-old Michael Jefferis, 45, of Merrillville, Indiana — was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation.
