ALLENDALE TWP. — A vehicle smashed into an Allendale gas station Friday while trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle; fortunately, there were no injuries in the incident, police said.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Speedway gas station located on Lake Michigan Drive, east of 48th Avenue, shortly after noon. The initial reports were that a vehicle had struck the gas station.

The on-scene investigation showed the following details:

Nathan Barrett, 18, was driving his 2005 Chevy Suburban and had made a Michigan turn on Lake Michigan Drive with the intention of going into the gas station. At the same time, Renae Jones was driving her 2004 GMC Yukon west on Lake Michigan Drive.

Jones told police that Barrett failed to yield to her and, rather than strike his vehicle from behind, she began to leave the roadway to the right. Somewhere during the course of Barrett driving into the driveway and Jones avoiding him, the two vehicles collided in a sideswipe fashion, said Sgt. Brian Buter.

After the initial contact, Jones’ SUV continued into the gas station’s parking lot and struck the face of the building, causing damage to several windows and the business’ front door.

Barrett was cited for failing to yield the right of way, Buter said.
