On Friday, police identified the man as Emmanuel Niyomugabo, 25, from Grand Rapids.
The identification was made using a fingerprint scanner and subsequent query through Michigan State Police Central Records, according to Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation, Hawke noted.
The body was first observed by witnesses in the swim area north of the state park’s pavilion, about 30 feet from shore.
The man was wearing a black swimsuit, police said. He was also wearing a black tank top with “Michigan” in white letters across the front and a picture of a motorcycle below the word “Michigan.”
