Police have identified the body they removed from Lake Michigan in front of Grand Haven State Park on Thursday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Emmanuel Niyomugabo, 25, from Grand Rapids.

An autopsy is scheduled and additional information will be provided once the autopsy is completed, according to Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke.

The body was first observed by witnesses in the swim area north of the state park’s pavilion and about 30 feet from shore.

The man was wearing a black swimsuit, police said. He was also wearing a black tank top with “Michigan” in white letters across the front and a picture of a motorcycle below the word “Michigan.”
