Motorcyclist killed in Holland Township crash

UPDATE (Thursday, 9:08 p.m.): Police have identified the motorcyclist as James Karsten, 75. They said the Holland Township man was traveling north on Westmont Avenue in Holland Township when he lost control of his motorcycle, causing him to leave the roadway and strike a wooden fence.

It does not appear that alcohol was a factor. The accident remains under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY:

HOLLAND TWP. — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in Holland Township.

The crash occurred when the motorcycle struck the fence by a house at 338 Westmont Ave. According to neighbors on the scene, the only witnesses to the crash were two boys, who immediately went to an adult to call 911.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the motorcyclist, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released pending family notification.

Sgt. David Vanderploeg of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is still underway, and more details will be released later. Vanderploeg said officers have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
