Grand Haven public safety officers used their combined muscle power to help a man in a wheelchair off a Harbor Transit trolley after the lift mechanism became stuck late Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the Chinook Pier trolley pick-up area shortly after 4 p.m.

Tom Hillson and some friends were planning to go for a trolley ride when the mechanism lifting Hillson’s wheelchair quit working partway up. Hillson was not injured.

Officers were able to lift the man in his wheelchair up several inches onto the trolley. They were then able to carefully lift him down the steps and back onto solid ground.

Hillson thanked the officers and declined a ride in the police car.

A Harbor Transit official said a mechanic was on his way to try to get the mechanism working so they could move the trolley away. Another trolley was coming to pick up the people waiting for a ride.
