Allendale man drowns in Lake Michigan

PORT SHELDON TWP. — Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a water rescue in Windsnest Park in Port Sheldon Township at 8:21 p.m. Wednesday.

The initial reports stated a male was last seen in the water approximately three minutes prior to the 911 call. The subject was swimming in Lake Michigan about 20 feet out from the park’s beach, at which time he was seen going underwater.

Deputies and Port Sheldon Township firefighters began searching the water for the missing swimmer, who was located shortly after arrival beneath the water’s surface. He was then transported by a North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance to Holland Hospital in critical condition.

The name of the subject is being withheld pending notification of family.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
