PORT SHELDON TWP. — An Allendale man has died after being pulled from Lake Michigan off an Ottawa County beach Wednesday night.

Police were called to a water rescue at Windsnest Park in Port Sheldon Township at 8:21 p.m. The call to 911 said the man was last seen swimming in Lake Michigan about 20 feet out from the park’s beach, at which time he was seen going underwater.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies and Port Sheldon Township firefighters began searching the water for the missing swimmer, who was quickly located beneath the water’s surface, said Sgt. Eric Westveer of the Sheriff’s Office marine unit.

The man was then transported by a North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance to Holland Hospital in critical condition. He died shortly after arrival at the hospital, Westveer said.

On Thursday, police identified the drowning victim as Brandon Schmidt, 20.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
