ALLENDALE TWP. — Police are crediting a local resident with the rescue of a 22-year-old Allendale Township man after he drove his car into a man-made lake late Saturday morning.

The man, whose name has not been released, was observed driving into a lake in the Placid Lakes subdivision shortly after 11 a.m. The subdivision is located just north of Lake Michigan Drive east of 84th Avenue.

Area resident Tami Geerts observed the incident and jumped into the water. The car was sinking with only the trunk visible when dispatchers received the call for help, said Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Geerts found a side window down and was able to pull the young man through the window.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was in stable condition, Buter said.

A wrecker service, with the help of Allendale firefighters, retrieved the car from the lake later that day.
