The Michigan Department of Transportation said that northbound U.S. 31 was closed just before 3 p.m. because of the crash.
Multiple units responded to the report of the crash. When police arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and witnesses said the driver was still inside.
Michigan State Police said after the flames were extinguished, an investigation found that there was evidence of only one person being in the vehicle.
The crash is still being investigated, but speed is believed to be a factor.
MDOT said U.S. 31 was reopened around 5:25 p.m.
The driver's identity is being withheld until the family is notified.
