GRAND HAVEN TWP. — Police are looking for a driver who fled the scene after crashing his vehicle into a tree at about 9 a.m. Tuesday across the street from Peach Plains Elementary School.

Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home of Ed and Pat Wessel, 15848 Comstock St., after they reported the crash in their yard.

Pat Wessel said the vehicle went off the road, through some of her spirea bushes and hit a large oak tree in the yard.

When Ed Wessel checked on the driver, the young man said he was OK and asked him to call 911. Then the man changed his mind, got upset, and shoved a bunch of stuff into his backpack and took off down the street, Pat said.

A police K-9 unit tracked the man into nearby Pottawattomie Park and then lost the scent, according to Pat Wessel.

A school official said deputies notified them of the incident, but said there was no danger to the school and that there was no need for a lockdown.

Police concluded their search and left the area shortly after 11 a.m.
