Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Grand Haven Township intersection at 3:45 p.m. They found the driver of the minivan unconscious and pinned in his smashed vehicle.
The investigation shows that Mykhaylo Pidgayetskyy, 50, of Schiller Park, Illinois, was driving a 2007 Volvo semi-truck pulling a trailer south on U.S. 31. Witnesses said the truck failed to stop at the red light and collided with a 2015 Dodge minivan that was eastbound on Lake Michigan Drive.
The minivan, driven by 58-year-old Jesus Flores of Grand Rapids, had just started through the intersection when it was struck by the semi, said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Sheriff’s Office.
Flores was temporarily pinned in the van and had to be extricated from it by Grand Haven Township firefighters. He was then transported to North Ottawa Community Hospital, where he is in stable condition, Wildfong said.
