HUDSONVILLE — A 76-year-old Hudsonville man died in a three-car crash Friday evening in Jamestown Township.

Emergency crews responded to eastbound I-196 at exit 2 just after 7 p.m.

Police said that Eldon Bylsma was driving east on the freeway, attempted to take the exit ramp and lost control of his 2002 Chevy Cavalier on the snow-covered road.

This caused his car to re-enter the eastbound lanes of I-196, where it was struck in the driver’s door by an eastbound 2006 Honda Odyssey. The Honda van was then struck from behind by a 2007 Buick LeSabre.

Bylsma was found unresponsive in his vehicle. Deputies and firefighters provided first aid, but the attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful, said Sgt. J. Douglas of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

There were no injuries to any of the occupants of the Honda or Buick, Douglas said.

The eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated.
