Emergency crews responded to the crash at U.S. 31 and Hayes Street in Grand Haven Township at 12:09 a.m.
Police said Eugene Brookfisher was driving his 2019 Honda west on Hayes, failed to stop for a blinking red light at the intersection and drove into the path of the northbound semi. Police said the semi had a flashing yellow light.
Brookfisher was trapped inside his car before being released by Grand Haven Township firefighters and North Ottawa Community Hospital paramedics.
An ambulance transported Brookfisher to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon. He was in critical condition at the time, said Sgt. Chris Dill of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the semi, 37-year-old David Hindenach of Fennville, was not injured.
Northbound U.S. 31 was closed for several hours after the crash for scene investigation. Dill said the crash remains under investigation.
