Police name new suspect in teen’s Holland-area murder

THE HOLLAND SENTINEL • Feb 18, 2019 at 8:02 PM

HOLLAND TWP. — Police have named a new suspect in the Feb. 16 shooting death of 14-year-old Troy “T.J.” Wells at a Holland-area hotel.

Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office released a statement to the media late Monday afternoon identifying Juan Sandro Cabrera, 18, as the primary suspect in Wells’ murder. He said the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office had issued warrants on open murder, felony firearms and gang membership felony.

Cabrera is not currently in police custody and officials are asking for the public’s help in locating him. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Silent Observer at 877-887-4536, or tips can be sent to

Cabrera is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall; weighing about 150 pounds; with black hair and brown eyes.

Bennett said Cabrera should be considered armed and dangerous, and that members of the public should not approach him.

Wells was killed at the Hampton Inn on Felch Street in Holland Township shortly after midnight Saturday. The Sheriff’s Office said they believe the shooting was gang-related, but it was unclear which parties were involved in gangs.

Shortly after police began investigating the murder, they initially named a 23-year-old Holland resident as a suspect. However, that man turned himself in to Texas police after learning of his outstanding warrants from his relatives in Michigan.

After the police in Texas interviewed the man, authorities said they no longer believed he was in Michigan at the time of Wells’ murder.

Detectives now believe some witnesses provided misleading or false information. The 23-year-old has since been released from custody.
