GRAND HAVEN TWP. — A man is in custody after police say he caused two crashes Wednesday morning, while a woman in his vehicle was in labor.

Police say the suspect caused the first crash on southbound U.S. 31 in Grand Haven Township, fled the scene and caused a second crash on Lake Michigan Drive (M-45).

Officers responded to the crash on U.S. 31 at Lake Michigan Drive shortly before 8 a.m., which involved injuries and five vehicles. Officers learned on arrival that two separate incidents had occurred.

According to police, the suspect, whose name is being withheld, was northbound on U.S. 31 when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Christina Ellis, 36, of West Olive. The driver then fled west on Lake Michigan Drive and hit a vehicle driven by Brandy Ketchum, 45, of Holland.

Responders transported Ketchum to an area hospital after she suffered injuries. She was in stable condition.

The woman in labor in the suspect’s car was transported by ambulance to a Muskegon-area hospital.

The suspect has been issued multiple citations and lodged for his warrant.

The incidents caused traffic backups on U.S. 31 for nearly an hour as debris was cleared from the road, according to police.
