The crash occurred around 1 p.m., prompting the highway to be shut down in the area for several hours.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said a 23-year-old Kentwood man driving a Mercedes Benz encountered a backup on the highway due to construction. He tried to avoid the traffic, but lost control of the car, hitting a Lexus that was stopped because of the backup. The Lexus then struck a Ford Escape, which was then pushed into two more cars.
A 62-year-old West Olive man was driving the Lexus, and he was killed in the crash.
The 23-year-old driver of the Mercedes Benz was transported to the hospital by Aero Med with critical injuries. A 60-year-old woman from West Olive was a passenger in the Lexus and she was also brought to the hospital with critical injuries.
The other three drivers involved in the incident were not injured.
The crash remains under investigation. Names of those involved had not been released as of Sunday evening.
