Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers were called to the park shortly before 2 p.m. after a woman was observed drinking alcohol on the beach. Alcohol is prohibited at Grand Haven State Park.
According to police, when park rangers approached the woman, she fled into Lake Michigan. However, she had a hard time staying afloat, and a nearby boater threw her a flotation device.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol responded, but the woman swam away from the patrol boat before being taken into custody by GHDPS officers, who had waded out into the water.
The 31-year-old Grand Rapids woman was lodged at the Ottawa County Jail with a blood alcohol content of 0.27, said Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke. She awaits arraignment on city ordinance violations.
