A longtime bus driver for Fruitport Community Schools continues to recover at a Grand Rapids hospital after being struck by a bus earlier this month.

Chelly Brown was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Fruitport Superintendent Bob Szymoniak said Brown was walking in the school district’s bus garage parking lot when she was struck by a school bus. Brown “experienced significant injury to her right leg and pelvis,” Szymoniak said, and police were notified of the incident.

“It was deemed an unfortunate accident with no discipline or charges filed,” Szymoniak said.

The superintendent said Brown’s condition was improving, but he didn’t have any more information on her status.

Brown has worked for the district for more than 30 years as a bus driver, Szymoniak said.

“She’s been an awesome driver for us,” he said. “Her kids love her and her colleagues love her.”

Szymoniak said school staff took up a collection to help Brown’s family. Students also conducted a Miracle Minute collection during a recent basketball game.

“It’s important to us to be good neighbors,” Szymoniak said. “I’m very proud of our school community.”
