WRIGHT TWP. — Westbound I-96 was closed for more than an hour early Sunday morning while police investigated a rollover crash near 8th Avenue.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene just before 4 a.m.

A 26-year-old Grand Rapids man was seriously injured in the one-vehicle crash. His name was withheld pending the investigation into the crash. Alcohol was involved, said Sgt. Jay Douglas.

The man was westbound on Hayes in a 2000 Chevy Suburban when he failed to negotiate the turn at 8th Avenue, said Douglas. His vehicle went off the road, rolled several times and came to rest on the side of westbound I-96.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash.

The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed while officials investigated the crash.
