Grand Haven Farmers Market to open Saturday

Spring is here, and that means the return of warm weather, sunny skies and fresh produce from area farms.

This also means the arrival of farmers market season.

Under the green canopy at the intersection of Harbor Drive and First Street, the Grand Haven Farmers Market will open for the season on Saturday.

“We are excited for the Farmers Market season to begin,” said Courtney Geurink, market manager for the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg. “Not only does it mean summer, it also means easier access to fresh and local produce, supporting our local economy, and enjoying the experience of shopping outdoors.”

The market will open at 8 a.m., featuring local farmers offering a variety of in-season produce, cut flowers, hanging baskets, baked items such as breads and pastries, coffee, jams and jellies, and more. It closes at 1 p.m.

The Grand Haven Farmers Market will be open every Saturday morning through the end of October. Wednesday mornings will be added to its schedule starting June 1.

The local Chamber of Commerce also manages the Spring Lake Farm & Garden Market, which takes place Thursdays in the Harvest Bible Chapel parking lot in Spring Lake. This year’s Spring Lake market will begin Thursday, June 2, and run through mid-October.

“We’re very fortunate in Northwest Ottawa County that, during the summer months, we have access to a farmers market three days a week,” Geurink said. “What better way to eat healthy and buy local.”

Marketgoers can also expect more ways to pay for their fresh purchases this year, too.

“We’re accepting a few more food assistance programs this summer,” Geurink noted.

Geurink said the Grand Haven Farmers Market will accept Prescription for Health, Bridge Card/Snap, Double Up Food Bucks, Senior Market Fresh and WIC Project Fresh, and Power of Produce Kids Club.

More information can be found on the markets’ Facebook page throughout the summer or by calling the Chamber office at 616-842-4910.
