The development on the northwest corner of Comstock Street and 168th Avenue is called Piper Lakes Apartments. Its first phase is four apartment buildings, with a total of 96 units, and a clubhouse with a pool, Township Manager Bill Cargo said.
“They are currently occupied with the site work,” he said.
This work includes water, sewer, stormwater and earth work.
Grand Haven-based Cherette Group is the developer behind the multi-phase complex that’ll eventually be comprised of eight three-story apartment buildings on a 14.5-acre parcel.
“The developer anticipates that phase 1 will be ready to move into by spring 2017,” Township Planner Stacey Fedewa said. “There is a second phase that will include four additional apartment buildings for a grand total of 204 units. Likely, phase 2 will be completed in 2018.”
Project developers purchased the site in March 2013. At the time of its approval by the Township Board, developers said the new complex would offer a variety of amenities including a clubhouse, pool, two ponds and a dog park. There would also be attached garages for 140 of the units.
The property was originally zoned for agricultural use; however, the land was rezoned to planned unit development (PUD) in 2014, allowing for higher-density commercial, industrial or residential use. This was pursuant to the township’s Master Plan and future land-use map.
