Fire truck rides, extrication and firefighting demonstrations were all part of two Fire Prevention Week open houses hosted Monday night by the Crockery Township and Ferrysburg fire departments.

Children got to try on firefighting gear and meet one of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 units.

Open houses continue this week: today, 5:30-8 p.m. at Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue; Thursday, 6-8 p.m. at Spring Lake Township Fire/Rescue’s station on 148th Avenue, just south of M-104; and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

Firefighters will also be going into local schools during the week to talk to children about fire safety and prevention.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is centered around replacing old smoke detectors.
