The sixth annual Journey to Bethlehem returns to Grand Haven’s Duncan Memorial Park this week.

Departures will take place from 5:45-8:15 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 5:15-8:45 p.m. Saturday. Travelers first meet up at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes, 717 Sheldon Road, to be placed in their “family” for the journey.

Tickets cost $5, and can be purchased online under the “Ticket” tab at www.journey2bethlehem.com.

Along the nearly 45-minute journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, attendees encounter Roman soldiers, profits, scribes and angels.

More than 500 volunteers from the Tri-Cities, Holland and Muskegon work together to make the journey possible.

Susan Thorpe, a sixth-year volunteer, said the annual event gets her in the spirit. Thorpe, who plays a shepherd, said she enjoys seeing the awe in people’s eyes as they see the journey brought to life.

When travelers finish their journey, Thorpe said she hopes they walk away knowing the love of Jesus and why he was born.

Regardless of your religious affiliation, Thorpe encourages everyone to take the journey.

“This will change them,” she said.
