Beach party fun at the library

SPRING LAKE — Frigid temperatures didn’t stop some local families from having beach-themed fun on Thursday.

At the indoor Winter Break Beach Party at Spring Lake District Library, children created sandcastles, lei necklaces and watercolor paintings, and played balloon volleyball and participated in other activities.

Meeting Mermaid Sadie was a highlight of attending the event, according to Maizie Patterson, Lola Kacprzyk, Charlotte Kacprzyk, and Summer Patterson.

“Because she’s an actual mermaid, and we get to have our picture taken with her,” explained Maizie, 7.

As the girls colored paper mermaid tails, 6-year-old Charlotte said she received her own purple and pink mermaid tail for her birthday. Charlotte said she likes mermaids because they swim with dolphins.

Although some children start out shy, they typically warm right up when they meet Sadie, who has been a mermaid for nearly two years and attends children’s events. When children meet her, Mermaid Sadie said she often hears questions such as, “How did you get here?” and “How do you walk?”

“It’s a ton of fun,” Mermaid Sadie said. “I love seeing kids’ curiosity and getting on their creative side with the mermaid tails.”
