SPRING LAKE — Children began using the new additions to the children’s area at Spring Lake District Library this past weekend, library officials said.

The area underwent changes with the help of the Friends of Spring Lake District Library. The volunteer group gave $10,300 to fund a new Lego/Duplo table, kitchen play area, and children's-size tables and chairs for the educational computers.

Library Director Claire Sheridan said it was their largest gift.

Some members of the group had a chance to see children playing in the revamped area Monday.

“This is fantastic, just fabulous,” said Bonnie Holmes, president of the volunteer group.

Holmes said the library wanted to grow the activities available for children. She noted that the library already had three computers for children, but they were on adult-size chairs and tables.

Youth Services Librarian Elizabeth Griffin said the changes are exciting, and library patrons comment on enjoying the additional activities.

“It’s fun to be able to expand that and give kids a chance to do more of the construction and imaginative play,” she said.

Friends of Spring Lake District Library is a non-profit group that meets on the first Monday of every other month.
