Connecting with kids

Several children and their families spent their Thursday morning listening to stories.

Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke joined Loutit District Library’s story time to read two stories – “Officer Buckle & Gloria” by Peggy Rathmann and “Even Firefighters Hug Their Moms” by Christine MacLean.

With April being National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Amy Dalman of the Children’s Advocacy Center said the event is a way for children to meet a law enforcement official in a friendly environment, and to help children understand that police officers are their friends and help keep them safe.

Dalman also shared information with families about body safety rules.

As children prepared to listen to the stories, Hawke said it’s great having the opportunity to interact with children, and noted that it encourages children to develop a habit of reading early.

Hawke said he most enjoys the interactions and answering questions from children or their parents.

Next week, someone from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office will read to children during a story time at Spring Lake District Library.
