The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety will use a recent donation to purchase beach safety equipment, as well as equipment for the department’s K-9 unit, according to Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke.

Representatives of the American Legion Riders presented a check for $3,500 to Hawke on Wednesday.

John Kemme, director of the riders from the Charles A. Conklin Post 28 in Grand Haven, said the funds were part of the money raised last fall during the Sept. 11, 2017, Patriots Day Ride. They are also being used to help support several programs for veterans, including Wilwin Lodge and Flying Heroes, as well as Boys and Girls State and the Goodfellows.

T-shirts from last year’s ride are still available for $10, and can be purchased at events taking place at the American Legion post, 700 S. Harbor Ave., on the second and fourth Tuesdays when food is served. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are always available to the public. You must be a member to purchase alcohol.

Donations can also be made by sending a check to the American Legion Riders, P.O. Box 439, Grand Haven, MI 49417.
