‘Mary Poppins Jr.’ flies into town

• Jul 12, 2018 at 7:00 AM

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins Jr.” is playing at the White Pines Intermediate School auditorium this week.

The first performance was Wednesday night; a second show is at 7 p.m. today, Thursday, July 12.

The “practically perfect” 70-minute musical, designed for middle school-age performers, is based on the classic P.L. Travers stories and the Walt Disney film. The cast of kids in grades 5-9 includes 30 students led by directors Kate Warner and Kyle Coon and assistant Katie Glasgow.

Join the Banks family as they encounter adventure after fun-filled adventure with their curious new nanny, Mary Poppins. Adapted especially for young performers, this musical includes favorite songs such as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” as well as new songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

The summer performing arts camp program is organized by the Northwest Ottawa Recreation Authority (NORA). In five weeks, the directors worked with students designing stage sets, practicing lines, singing and dance choreography.

“It’s amazing to see the talent these young students have at such a young age,” said NORA Coordinator Jill Vander Stel. “You won’t want to miss this show.”

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.
