Garbage truck snags phone lines

One block of Sherman Street in Grand Haven was closed for about an hour Thursday after a garbage truck snagged some wires and pulled down a couple of utility poles.

Police and crews from the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power responded to the scene, between Sand and Leggatt streets, shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Police said that a power arm on a Waste Management truck snagged the wires, which turned out to be telephone lines. The tension pulled down the power arm on the truck as well as one pole on the side of the street and another pole farther back in the yard of a residence.

The cut-down poles are being removed by the telephone company as they move their lines to new poles installed more than a year ago by the BLP, an official said.

Power company workers went ahead and removed the hanging pole and reattached the lines to a newer pole for safety reasons.
