The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project is wrapping up this afternoon. Officials say the weather has cooperated this summer and the project has reached its completion ahead of schedule.
The work began in the fall of 2016 when the catwalk was removed from the pier. The catwalk will be reinstalled to the pier in the coming months.
Brian Essenburg, a construction representative for the Corps of Engineers, said no work was done at the very end of the pier near the lighthouse, and urged caution when venturing out there.
“Out there is very slippery and dangerous right now,” he said. “Nobody has been walking out there for two years. The water’s high and the moss has grown up there.”
A public picnic on the pier will begin at 6 this evening to celebrate the reopening. Food will not be provided.
