The public is invited to participate in a memorial service in observance of next week’s Patriot Day.

The service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28, 700 S. Harbor Ave. in Grand Haven.

The service is expected to last about 30 minutes. It will feature several guests, and the local American Legion’s Honor Guard will fire off a rifle volley and play “Taps.”

Guest speakers will include Lt. Brian Howard, the commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Grand Haven Sector Field Office; Grand Haven Mayor Geri McCaleb; Grand Haven Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke; American Legion Post 28 1st Vice Cmdr. Janet Fonger; and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 2nd Vice President Melanie Riekels.

With the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaching, Post Cmdr. John Bilski said they don’t want people to forget what happened that day.

“We have to take every step we can so we never forget what happened that day and how it changed our lives forever,” he said.

Refreshments will be provided prior to the ceremony.
